Field
Projection Mapping | 2D Motion Graphics | 3D Motion Graphics
Field by Lightscape is a site-specific video mapping and light installation commissioned by Gallery 126 and the Galway Arts Festival. The realisation of the project was a collaborative process between designers and programmers Brian Kenny, Mick Murray and Tom O'Dea.
Client: Galway Arts Festival/126 Gallery
Venue: 126 gallery, Galway
Date: July 2013
Field is an exploration of the relationship between the subjective perceptions of a changing physical environment and the passing of time within an increasingly technologically mediated society.
By both re-appropriating the physical as a digital landscape and immersing the user within the virtual, Field encourages the user to examine the physical effects of technological change and exponential growth on their own landscape.
By exploring the boundaries between the perceived and actual Field questions our conception of the solidity of the natural world in the face of both natural process and human intervention.
Field utilises two-dimensional reverse video mapping techniques along with custom software and electronics to create virtual and physical lightscapes.
Field makes use of the experimental PixelPusher technology with Processing.
The audio, composed by Christian Kleine, is Red Norvo and is used with the kind permission of the artist.
Additional Technical Info:
The installation runs from a single catalyst media server sending 2400 x 800 to 3 Benq MS616ST projectors. The projectors are 2,500 lumens each with a throw ratio of 1.2:! . All signal is run over HDMI via a Matrox Triple Head. The pyramids and LED strips run from pixel pusher LED drivers which receive signal from catalyst via a processing patch.
The wall geometry is drawn composed black matte gaff tape with the help of 126 Gallery and our friends John and Megan, and projection mapped using the reverse mapping technique developed by artists including Joanie Lemercier & Yannick Jacquet.
The pixelpusher technology was developed by Heroic Robotics,a group of industrial designers and artists based in San Fransisco. The technology was funded through a kickstarter and the team behind it were extremely helpful to us throughout this process.
